The Book and the Movie
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee was written by the American writer Dee Brown, this novel tells the heart wrenching tale of Native Americans in the late nineteenth century. Brown describes the population's displacement through forced relocation by the United States government. It is significant as the first novel to express in great detail the perspective of Native Americans. It was Published in 1970, and has since been translated into 17 languages and never gone out of print. [2]
The movie was made in 2007 and was directed by Yves Simoneau. The screenplay was written by Daniel Giat. It does an excellent job of remaining true to the history. The costumes and props are very authentic looking, which adds significantly to the believability of the film. Every character actually existed. It was not filmed entirely on site, as it was filmed in Canada, but the landscape is nonetheless realistic.
The film begins with the Battle of Little Bighorn (also known as Colonel Custer's Last Stand), where Custer attacks the Indians but fails to obtain victory and dies. Though Ohiyesa (later to become Charles Eastman) is shown as being present for the battle, he was not.
